‘This is a unique boy’ – Shakhtar Donetsk CEO Serhiy Palkin reveals the warning he gave to Chelsea over Mykhailo Mudryk

Chelsea have been told they must be patient with Mykhailo Mudryk as the winger continues to flatter to deceive since his January arrival.

Big things were expected of the 22-year-old after he swapped Shakhtar Donetsk for Stamford Bridge in a deal rising to £88million.

But the forward has so far failed to hit the heights in west London, with the youngster without a goal from his nine outings.

He failed to hold down a regular starting spot under Graham Potter, and it remains to be seen if he will find himself on the bench following Frank Lampard’s return.

But Shakhtar CEO Serhiy Palkin has urged Chelsea they have a ‘diamond’ in Mudryk, who he has labelled as ‘unique’ and ‘unbelievable’.

Speaking to Sky Sports, Palkin declared that Mudryk’s spirits remain high despite pundits questioning his abilities.

He said: “A week ago in England, I met Mykhailo Mudryk and he is very happy.

“He likes everything that is going on [there], he wants to work hard, he wants to show the best.

“I said from the beginning, I spoke to the owners of Chelsea, and I told them you’ve got a real diamond but you should be very, very patient.

“Give this guy time and he will show you what he can bring to the club.

“I know 100 per cent he will participate [in winning] many, many trophies for Chelsea in the future.

“This is a very, very unique boy. A unique boy with unbelievable technical characteristics.

“I stayed at the club [Shakhtar] for 20 years. I have seen a lot of players.

“This one, from a professional point of view and how hard he works, I have never seen it in my life.”

Mudryk’s Ukrainian compatriot and ex-Chelsea striker Andriy Shevchenko recently come to the defence of the player.

He stated: “Chelsea have bought a talented player when he is very young, for the future.

“He’s just starting his path in a massive football career.

“He’s part of an ambitious project. He’s in good hands. The decision to get him right now was down to how much the club believe in his talent.”
