Premier League: Chelsea vs. Newcastle United - Preview
Chelsea will be aiming to salvage a disappointing Premier League season on a positive note as they host Newcastle United at Stamford Bridge on Sunday afternoon.
Currently sitting in 12th place, the Blues face the possibility of dropping as low as 14th depending on the final matchday results, while Newcastle has secured a top-four finish, trailing third-placed Manchester United by two points.
Chelsea Preview
Chelsea's season took another blow on Thursday evening as they suffered their 16th league defeat, a 4-1 loss to Manchester United at Old Trafford. Despite Joao Felix's late consolation goal, Frank Lampard's side had already suffered a 4-0 defeat before the Portuguese forward found the net.
Undeniably, it has been a disastrous campaign for the Blues, winning just 11 out of 37 league matches, drawing 10, and losing 16. Their tally of 43 points is only enough to secure a 12th-place finish heading into the final fixtures.
While a victory over Newcastle could see them surpass Crystal Palace to claim 11th place, a defeat coupled with other unfavorable results could push them down to 14th, adding insult to injury.
Preparations for next season are already underway, with Mauricio Pochettino set to take over as head coach, replacing interim manager Lampard. Since returning to the club following Graham Potter's departure, Lampard has managed just one win, one draw, and eight defeats in 10 games.
With no European football on the horizon, a win on Sunday would provide some solace to the fans. Notably, Chelsea has not dropped points against Newcastle at home in the Premier League since May 2012.
Newcastle Preview
Newcastle's place in next season's Champions League was secured with a goalless draw against Leicester City. It has been an impressive campaign for Eddie Howe's side, accumulating 70 points from 37 matches and currently sitting in fourth place, trailing Manchester United by two points.
To claim a top-three finish, Newcastle needs a victory against Chelsea and hopes that Manchester United falters against Fulham at home.
Having last competed in the group stage of the Champions League in 2003, Newcastle's involvement in Europe's premier competition will undoubtedly attract higher caliber players, making the upcoming transfer window an intriguing period for the club.
Despite their successful season, Newcastle has only managed one win in their last four league matches. In their most recent away game on May 13, they were held to a 2-2 draw by Leeds United.
Newcastle secured a 1-0 victory over Chelsea at St James' Park in December, and they will be aiming to achieve their first league double over the London side since the 1986-87 campaign. However, Newcastle has only emerged victorious once in their last 27 visits to Stamford Bridge in the Premier League.
As Chelsea and Newcastle prepare to conclude their seasons, the match offers an opportunity for both teams to leave a lasting impression. While Chelsea seeks redemption for a disappointing season, Newcastle aims to cap off their successful campaign with another positive result.
