Jurgen Klopp sympathised with Leeds United forward Georginio Rutter and the manner in which his Liverpool players suffocated him in stoppage time of their 6-1 win at Elland Road on Monday night.
The Liverpool boss added that it was his ‘favourite’ moment of the match because, in the 92nd minute, with Georginio Rutter trying to carry the ball forward out of his own half, several opposition players just crowded him out and nicked the ball off the £35k-a-week star (Spotrac).
Even though Liverpool were winning 6-1, the players were acting like they were 1-0 down and needed a goal, that’s probably why Jurgen Klopp called the 20-year-old ‘the poor boy’ for how he wasn’t allowed to breathe on the ball.
This was classic Liverpool and a huge question as to why this type of aggression without the ball wasn’t shown on the road this season.
In the end, they can only deal with what’s ahead of them, and that’s trying to secure an unlikely top-four finish, with Klopp sharing his thoughts on that Rutter moment, as he told Premier League Productions
“I don’t know where to start, the whole game was brilliant,” said Klopp.
“Apart from that (Leeds goal). We were in super control of the game. We played brilliantly. Calm. The counter-pressing was the best for ages, ages. Loved it.
“My favourite situation of the game is the 92nd minute. We lose the ball and four players chase the boy (Rutter). The poor Leeds United boy on the ball down and it’s absolutely fantastic.”
THREE MORE AWAY GAMES
Three away games of the season remain for Liverpool before this troublesome season closes its chapter and it’s three teams fighting relegation that will be on their list.
Just like at Elland Road, they should see all these through – West Ham, Leicester and Southampton.
But, given Leeds’ current form, even if they do win those matches, it perhaps isn’t going to be as easy as they destroyed Javi Gracia’s side.
